My dad was born on 1st December 1941, he met my mum in 1962 and they got married on 29th march 1963. He worked at Magbiehill Farm until 9th november 1964 when he joined the army. He joined the Royal Scots Greys which proceeded to amalgamate with the Carbineers and become the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. He spent 22 years in the british army, most of it in Germany working for the general as a driver and then in the household after an accident took away the sight in one of his eyes. He received the GSM 1962 Clasp Northern Ireland medal on 15th June 1973, he received his Long Service Good Conduct medal on 21st November 1979 much to the surprise of General Stanier who could not understand how he managed to get it. On her visit to Hilltop House in Germany he was proud to have served Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 7th and 8th July 1982. When he came out of the army on 9th may 1986 he spent 6 months at Yeomanry House in Ayr getting his final discharge on 8th November 1986. On discharge from the army he went into security working with Monarch Security. He then started working driving taxis, going on to become the owner of a taxi himself. In 1995 he was diagnosed as having leukaemia. For 2 years he was in and out of hospital receiving treatment to try and keep his condition controlled and keep him pain free. He fought his illness bravely and without complaining.
On June 30th 1997 at 5.26pm with my mum, myself and my Aunty Cath at his bedside he took his last breath after fighting all weekend.
He was a great dad and a fantastic granddad, I love and miss him so much as do my children especially my son to whom he was a father figure doing all the things a father and granddad would do with a boy.

12 years on

Well dad its been 12 years since I sat by your bedside with my mum holding your hand and wanting your pain to stop. Not a day goes by that I don't think of that day and wish you had been able to stay with us. I saw it that day just how much strain your illness put on you because when you closed your eyes and took your last breath all the pain and strain went from your face and there was only peace. I love you dad you were the best and you left me with so many good memories. You taught me to look after myself and to never give up. I miss you so much but I know you are well and looking after Lynnette and thats some job.
You will always have a big place in my heart and will always be remembered with love respect and happiness.
love always
